Where to Get Started in Automating your Bagging Process?

April 18, 2024

With so many different types of bagging machines on the market, it is easy to understand why so many companies stick to the status quo of hand packing. Whilst hand packing is very flexible to switch between various product types, it’s also labour intensive and difficult to scale effectively when peak periods arrive. The addition of a bagging machine to semi-automate the bagging process can result in substantial cost savings and the flexibility to react to surges in demand.

So where to start?

Firstly, our packaging company will analyse the range of products and typical volumes to determine the best bagging machine for the application. For lower volume applications or those that require frequent changeover of bag sizes or label types, then our Speedpack 300 table top system would be the go to choice. As our most popular machine, it provides a step into the world of semi automation, and enhances your packing process. It can pack an impressive 15 bags per minute, including your label printed directly onto the front of the bag. With a small footprint and all-electric operation it is an ideal bagging solution for a wide variety of product types and applications.

When to go for a high-speed systems?

Speed is everything right? Not necessarily, and if you’re only packing in small batches or you are changing your label frequently, we wouldn’t usually recommend our high speed systems. However, for applications that have high volumes with infrequent changeovers, our high speed Speedpack 400 bagging machine can deliver lightning fast packing speeds for your business. Our Speedpack 400 system is capable of packing a rapid 60 bags per minute depending on the application/product. As an extra benefit the system can also be supplied as a hybrid system capable of running LDPE tubing with the ability to change the bag length from a single roll of film. Whilst this naturally decreases the packing speeds on offer, it gives the ultimate flexibility to switch between high speed bags on a roll and changeable bag lengths with LDPE tubing.

What are the options for printing on the bags?

All of our bagging machines are print-n-pack systems are capable of inline printing barcodes, product descriptions and recyclable logos directly onto the front of the bag. This not only improves pack presentation, but critically ensures the packaging can be recycled. For applications that demand retail ready packaging, we can pre-print the bags in up to 8 colours and they can include hanger holes for instore display purposes.

Can I automate the process?

Yes, if the application allows and is the most cost effective option, then we can supply a range of automated infeed systems to fully automate the bagging process. Our range of solutions include vibratory bowl feeders, high precision scales, linear weigh systems and conveyor infeeds. As ever with automated applications, the products need to be both suitable for feeding and with reasonable volumes to avoid lengthy changeovers which reduce the overall efficiency.

Do you have bagging machines suitable for e-commerce?

At Severn Packaging, our Speedpack 550 system has been designed especially for the e-commerce and mail fulfilment markets. With a maximum bag width of 550mm it can easily handle larger product types including shoe boxes, apparel, homewares and soft furnishings.
